So Long Accent Walls, Here Are the Biggest Wallpaper Trends of 2025 (2024)

Take one look at this year's Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas or the latest issues of VERANDA and you’ll find that wallpaper is taking the design world by storm. Nothing warms our hearts more than adding pattern, depth, and texture to a space, and Color Curator for Farrow & Ball Joa Studholme agrees. “As maximalism continues to influence our design tastes, there is no greater transformative element in our arsenal than wallpaper which will reflect our unique personalities.”

Plus, with advancements in technology and the accessibility of purchasing wallpaper online, it's never been easier to find a wallpaper that you love. Cowtan & Tout's Design Director Catherine Croner says that wallpaper is an abundant and useful design tool. "It seems there is something for everyone out there. There is unlimited experimentation going on as this category grows," she adds.

To help you get started, we asked design experts to predict the biggest wallpaper trends of 2025. Here's what to expect for next year and beyond.

Textured Wallcoverings

We’ve been seeing natural materials rise in popularity for quite some time now, but textures like grasscloth, silks, and brush strokes will continue to trend next year and beyond.

“In the U.S., designers and clients tend to call natural wallcovering grasscloth, while in Europe and South America, many refer to all natural wallcovering as raffia,” shares Jeffrey Bershad, the CEO of Phillip Jeffries. “No matter what you call it, bringing nature into your home is a trend that has become timeless.”

Unlike specific patterns or color trends, textured wallpaper goes with any style. “Grasscloth wallpaper isn’t going anywhere soon due to its natural texture and warm, inviting feel,” reveals designer Kate Marker of her eponymous firm, Kate Marker Interiors. “Its versatility complements various interior styles, from traditional to contemporary. Its popularity will continue to rise as people seek sustainable and eco-friendly design options.”

Regan Baker of the San-Francisco-based Regan Baker Design agrees that textures like grasscloth are here to stay. “It is a texture that creates depth and interest while not being too loud for some people. It has a sophisticated and elevated feel without going too over the top,” Baker says.

Grasscloth aside, you'll also find other types of textured wallcoverings to be a predominant force in 2025. Bershad explains, “Another material that is truly timeless is silk. It has a sense of elegance and there is beauty in its slubbing, soft paneling, and irregular texture.”

Big and Small Patterns

Patterned wallpaper has come a long way since the powdery grandma florals of the '80s. Studholme says that playing with scale will continue to be a wallpaper trend in 2025. She says, “The trend is to either go super-sized, almost mural-like or to use a whimsical micro-pattern print, a repeat pattern that feels subtle yet adds interest to any room.”

The Retirement of Accent Walls

Once a fixture in the design world, wallpaper accent walls are now a thing of the past. “Wallpaper wrapping all the walls within a room or space will be trending more than single accent walls,” shares Baker. Most designers agree than a wallpaper accent wall can actually hurt the aesthetics and proportions of your space.

“Using paper on an accent wall has become less popular recently as decorators have realized that this can upset the proportions of a room,” Studholme shares. “The one exception to this is using a wallpaper behind the bed, as long as you use the background color of the paper on the other three walls.”

The Fifth Wall

No surface of your home is safe, and the fifth walls (aka ceilings) have become the new frontier for wallcoverings.

“Wallpapered ceilings always bring joy—we think of it as our fifth wall, and a way of decorating that should be here for a while,” shares Studholme. “Wallpapering the ceiling of transitional spaces can add extra impact while keeping the walls neutral, and nothing can delight children more than a patterned ceiling.”

Patterned wallpaper isn't the only ceiling treatment designers are excited about; gold and silver leaf is also making a major comeback.

“About 15 years ago, we were primarily seeing dining room ceilings covered with metallic leaf. However, over the last few years, the fifth wall has grown in design importance as more clients are requesting their entire rooms be enveloped in design,” shares Bershad. “The trend of using metallic leaf on ceilings continues to be strong and growing. It's such an incredible look when you have a chandelier that’s lit up for a dinner party and the light bounces off the leafing, giving the room that beautiful subtle glow.”

Murals

Murals, which once could only be done by hand, are now growing in popularity as advancements in technology make them more accessible.

“In the past, wallcoverings had to be printed by screen or by gravure rollers, which meant the repeat was limited. The only way to achieve a mural design was by using a paint brush,” explains Bershad. “However, with the advent of digital printing, this has allowed the development of more large-scale patterns and murals that can span the entire wall or an entire room with no repeat.”

There are certain places where murals particularly shine—especially in entryways or entertaining spaces like dining rooms and cocktail lounges. "Scenics and murals are well suited to public spaces and larger areas where some distance to take in the expanse of the design is available," explains Croner.

Bespoke Details

Originality has always been important when it comes to design, but in a world where you can get furniture or wallpaper delivered to your home the next day with just a few taps on your phone, it’s more important than ever to make your space feel truly custom to you. That’s why wallpaper with bespoke features, such as tiny details and hand-painted designs, are growing in popularity.

“Moving forward we'll see more hand-painted designs that are proportional in scale and truly custom to the room,” says Baker. “Hand-painted details overall will be a big trend. Wallpaper borders and trim are also coming back, which add another layer of detail to a room.”
