And it’s so satisfying to read bottles or other items and know what is written in another language. Fast forward, now I know far more Korean words, but you can never forget your first ones!

I decided to try this traditional banana milk from Drive Me Hungry and put my own spin on it. I even had another one the morning after and let me tell you, it was the perfect breakfast drink, refreshing in the summer heat.

What is banana milk?
Banana milk, known as 바나나 우유 in Korean (banana uyu or banana mat uyu) is a delicious creamy and sweet drink made of fresh bananas, sugar and water. This popular Korean drink is loved both in Korea and in the rest of the world.
In the 1970s the South Korean government requested the population to up their milk consumption in answer to widespread malnutrition. People were not used to drinking plain milk, so in 1974 the Korean beverage company Binggrae created and launched on the market the famous Binggrae banana milk. What ingredients will I need for this Korean banana milk recipe?
This homemade version of this popular Korean drink requires very few simple ingredients. The main character of this recipe is of course a banana, a ripe or overripe works best for this recipe (if you are tired of using your overripe bananas for banana bread, this is the recipe for you!).
Then you will need water -help to create a creamy texture, pure vanilla extract, maple syrup, milk and ice – but that’s optional. As easy as it can get! And you will only need a blender, so what is better than a quick delicious drink recipe done in less than a minute?
Can I substitute anything in this homemade banana milk recipe?
Absolutely you can! You can sub only these ingredients:
- whole milk: you can use oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, soy milk or any other plant-based milk of your choice. Personally, I found that oat works very well with it when I had a second one of this banana-flavoured drink;
- maple syrup: some recipes call for sugar instead, whether you prefer white or brown sugar, or you could use agave syrup or any other sweetener of choice;
How to make Korean banana milk recipe at home
In a high-powered blender, add the peeled banana, water, vanilla extract, maple syrup and milk and blend for a minute or until you won’t have any banana bits left. Pour it over ice in a serving glass and enjoy!
How long does Korean banana milk last?
As this easy banana milk takes less than a minute to make and because it tends to separate, we suggest you have it straight away and have it as fresh as possible. But it can keep in the fridge for another day, just make sure to mix it before serving as the ingredients separate.
